Welcome Gabo + Cari!
We’re so excited to introduce you to Gabo, a young boy from Guatemala whose story we’ll be sharing with you over the next several weeks. Through a weekly comic strip, you’ll follow Gabo’s journey to Minnesota, the challenges he faces, and the spark of hope he finds as he connects his “why” to the fight against climate change.
Alongside him is Cari, a colorful stuffed aracari bird gifted to him by his abuela before leaving his homeland. Cari becomes Gabo’s guide, his protector, and a symbol of perseverance as Gabo discovers the link between the storms that uprooted his family and the pollution threatening his new neighborhood.
Climate displacement is one of the fastest-growing consequences of the climate crisis. The United Nations estimates that by 2050, over 200 million people could be displaced by extreme weather, rising seas, and environmental degradation. Gabo’s story is just ONE glimpse into this global reality and a reminder that behind every statistic is a child, a family, a community.
We don’t want to give away too much (no spoilers!), since each page of the comic will reveal new moments of Gabo’s journey. But we hope you’ll follow along as we explore themes of migration, resilience, and community solutions to climate change.
This project was made possible thanks to the City of Minneapolis, whose partnership allows us to shine a light on these urgent issues while celebrating storytelling and art as tools for change.
Below you’ll find the first page of Gabo’s story! We can’t wait to share the rest with you in the weeks to come.
