Welcome to the
Air
Quality Program

CALL TO ACTION

Clean, healthy air at home shouldn’t depend on your income. Our program helps families understand what’s in their air, and what we can do together to protect our kids, support our elders, and keep working-class communities from being left behind in the clean energy transition.

We place monitors in homes to measure pollution from gas stoves. Then we sit down with families to review the results, answer questions, and talk through next steps. Because this work isn’t about numbers. It’s about people, health, and justice.

We’re collecting real stories and data to push the City of Minneapolis and our utilities to act. Your voice helps make that possible.

What You Can Expect

  1. Air monitor installation
A Unidos MN staff member installs a small indoor air-quality monitor near your stove. It runs for several days while you cook as usual.

  2. Daily cooking diary
During the 2-day monitoring window, you'll keep a simple diary of cooking activities and ventilation use. (You’ll receive a chart to track everything.)

  3. Results and conversation
A staff member retrieves the monitor and reviews the results with you. You’ll see:

    • How your daily cooking activities affect indoor air

    • How your indoor air compares to outdoor air

    • Practical steps you can take to reduce exposure

Together, we learn what’s happening in your home’s air, and what we can do about it.

Indoor Air Quality Matters

Most people think pollution only happens outside. But some of the most harmful air we breathe is actually inside our homes.

Gas stoves release pollutants such as:

  • Nitrogen dioxide

  • Carbon monoxide

  • Benzene

These pollutants can trigger asthma, headaches, respiratory problems, and, over time, increase the risk of chronic illness. Children, elders, and people with existing health conditions are especially at risk.

Through this program, and in partnership with the City of Minneapolis, we’re offering free indoor air-quality testing while families cook, giving people clear information about the air they’re breathing and the tools to demand better for their neighborhoods.

We’re calling on the Minneapolis City Council and the Mayor to continue investing in solutions that address the climate crisis and racial inequities—block by block. A key part of that work is elevating the real stories of Minneapolis residents who are living with the health impacts of gas stove pollution every day.
