Director of Data & Technology

Unidos MN is an immigrant-led, BIPOC-majority, multiracial, statewide organization building power for Minnesotan working families to advance social, racial, and environmental justice. Born out of the immigration justice movement, our work centers immigration reform, democracy, education, healthcare, workers’ rights, and climate justice.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Data & Technology leads the design, integrity, and evolution of Unidos MN’s data and technology systems, with a primary focus on the backend infrastructure that powers rapid response operations, real-time organizing, and coordinated campaign activity.

This role is responsible for designing, overseeing, and scaling the systems that allow Unidos MN to mobilize communities quickly, track on-the-ground activity, and transform information into timely, actionable insight. The Director owns database architecture, data models, pipelines, integrations, governance standards, and the technical frameworks that ensure reliability during both everyday organizing and moments of urgency.

This position oversees how data flows across organizing, communications, and leadership, ensuring accuracy, security, and operational speed while supporting broader organizing, electoral, and advocacy efforts.

This is a systems-oriented leadership role centered on infrastructure, interoperability, and long-term technical strategy.

REPORTING & TEAM STRUCTURE

The Director of Data & Technology supervises the Data & Technology Manager and is responsible for establishing technical standards, systems design, and infrastructure strategy across the organization.

The Manager role supports day-to-day technical operations, hardware and software stability, staff and organizer support, and applied data tasks, escalating systemic or architectural issues to the Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership & Rapid Response Infrastructure

  • Design and execute a data and technology strategy centered on rapid response, crisis organizing, and real-time field coordination

  • Design, oversee, and optimize backend systems supporting rapid response hotlines, incident tracking, canvassing, and field operations

  • Develop protocols for real-time data intake, validation, routing, and reporting

  • Ensure seamless integration between organizing tools, databases, communications platforms, and reporting systems

  • Identify technical risks, bottlenecks, and failure points, implementing preventative solutions

  • Evaluate and implement emerging tools and technologies that improve speed, reliability, and security

  • Represent Unidos MN in statewide and national data and rapid response networks

Systems Architecture & Data Infrastructure

  • Own database architecture, data models, schemas, and backend logic across organizational systems

  • Develop and oversee data pipelines, integrations, and cross-platform workflows

  • Establish standards for data collection, validation, integrity, and interoperability

  • Prevent system fragmentation, duplication, and unofficial data workflows

Data Oversight & Decision Support

  • Develop and oversee performance metrics tied to rapid response effectiveness, engagement, and organizing outcomes

  • Oversee development of clear, actionable reports and dashboards for leadership and program teams

  • Analyze trends and patterns to inform strategic decision-making

  • Advise senior leadership on technology investments, data governance, and infrastructure priorities

Data Governance, Security & Standards

  • Establish and oversee data governance practices, system standards, and access controls

  • Design and guide implementation of data security, privacy, and protection frameworks

  • Ensure responsible handling of sensitive and high-risk information

  • Develop long-term system reliability, documentation, and continuity practices

Vendor & Technical Partnerships

  • Lead relationships with external technical partners, vendors, and data cooperatives

  • Define technical standards, scopes, and requirements for outside work

  • Guide evaluation, selection, and implementation of external solutions

  • Ensure vendor decisions align with organizational infrastructure and security needs

Capacity Building & Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Partner with organizing, communications, and leadership teams to design effective technical systems

  • Support organizers and staff by ensuring tools and data systems function coherently

  • Build internal documentation, workflows, and technical clarity

  • Supervise and guide Data & Technology staff and contractors

Who You Are: 

You are a systems-level thinker who understands infrastructure, not just tools. You are comfortable designing technical frameworks, working with databases and structured datasets, and building systems that allow organizations to operate with clarity, stability, and speed.

You believe data and technology should reduce friction, strengthen organizing, and enable more informed decision-making. You are calm under pressure, comfortable navigating fast-moving environments, and able to design solutions that work in real-world campaign and movement settings.

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Strong experience with database design, data modeling, and backend system architecture

  • Proficiency working with structured datasets and query-based systems (SQL, BigQuery, or similar)

  • Experience designing or managing data pipelines and system integrations

  • Deep understanding of data integrity, validation, and system reliability

  • Ability to evaluate platforms, vendors, and technical tradeoffs

  • Comfort operating in fast-paced, high-stakes environments

Experience in electoral, advocacy, nonprofit, or movement organizations is helpful but not required.

HOURS AND COMPENSATION

  • Salary range: Starting at $80,000, commensurate with experience

  • Premium Blue Cross Blue Shield Zero Deductible Plan, with 100% premium coverage for employees and 70% premium coverage for dependents—an employer-paid benefit valued up to $22,000 annually.

This is a full-time position with a six-month probation period. Evening and weekend hours are required on a regular basis.

Proficiency in additional languages such as Spanish, Somali, Oromo, Hmong, Amharic, Mam, or Quechua
